The Board of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) says they applied the ‘one song nomination per category’ rule in the recent nominations released for this year’s awards.
According to the board, King Paluta’s ‘Aseda’ song received more streaming and radio play than his ‘Makoma’ single after conducting research.
Their response comes after King Paluta, a top contender for Artiste of the Year, petitioned the board over the omission of ‘Makoma’ from several categories, particularly Most Popular Song of the Year.
According to a statement released by the board, they choose one song from each artiste in each category to ensure that votes for an artiste are not split when fans vote for their favourites. “The board has observed some confusion regarding category rules and would like to provide clarification.
“Our rules stipulate that each artiste can only have one song nomination per category, with the exception of Best Collaboration, Best International Collaboration and Best Music Video categories, which recognise contributions of collaborators and video directors.
“The rule ensures that artistes do not split their votes (from public, academy and Board) and instead have the best possible chance of winning,” the statement said.
The Board in the statement further explained that they applied this rule in the case of King Paluta’s ‘Aseda’, which was a more appropriate choice for Most Popular Song and Highlife Song of the Year.
“The TGMA Board reaffirms its commitment to fairness for artistes. We also reiterate our dedication to educating stakeholders, leveraging the error and omission window as valuable learning tools.
