Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is no longer being held by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to checks on the agency’s detainee locator system.
The update was also confirmed by activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who said information from his sources indicates that Mr Ofori-Atta was released on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
Mr Ofori-Atta had been in ICE custody since early January 2026, following his arrest in the United States over concerns related to his immigration status. He was detained in the Virginia area, with his legal team later clarifying that the case centered on the legality of his stay in the country.
While in detention, he was denied bail by a U.S. court as he challenged the case and worked to regularize his immigration situation.
His detention attracted significant public and political attention due to his previous role as Ghana’s finance minister.
The development now raises questions about the next steps in his legal and immigration process, including whether he will remain in the United States or face possible extradition.
So far, neither U.S. authorities nor his legal representatives have issued an official statement explaining the circumstances of his release.
