Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced the formation of a committee to address growing concerns over increases in hostel accommodation fees at universities across the country.
The committee comprises representatives from the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and university authorities.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, May 12, during the inauguration of governing councils for Jasikan College of Education and the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences.
According to the Minister, the committee will continue consultations with key stakeholders, including university vice-chancellors, to identify a fair and sustainable solution to the issue.
Mr. Iddrisu acknowledged public concerns surrounding recent adjustments in hostel fees and stressed the need for broader consultations to ensure an amicable outcome.
He further cautioned that while private sector involvement in hostel development is important, it should not result in exploitative pricing that places excessive financial burden on students and their families.
The Minister emphasised that government remains committed to ensuring a socially responsible approach in the provision of public infrastructure and services.
The move follows widespread public criticism over significant increases in accommodation charges in some tertiary institutions nationwide.
Meanwhile, Mr. Iddrisu disclosed that the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences is expected to admit its first batch of about 800 students by October this year.
He also revealed that government is considering the establishment of additional public universities, including one in the Western North Region.
According to him, proposals for new universities will be presented to John Dramani Mahama and government through the appropriate channels for policy consideration.
The Minister assured residents of the Western North Region that the area remains part of government’s long-term plans to expand access to higher education infrastructure across the country.
