Teachers in the Adentan–Madina–Abokobi enclave are set to meet the Municipal Chief Executive for Adentan, Ella Christine Esinam Nongo, along with other stakeholders, to resolve an ongoing industrial dispute sparked by the alleged assault of a teacher.

The meeting follows a decision by members of the teaching fraternity to withdraw their services, refusing to return to classrooms as schools reopen. The teachers have maintained that they will only resume work after the individuals accused of the assault are arrested and prosecuted.

Chairman of the Adentan branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Christian Yaw Adinkrah, expressed hope that the engagement will lead to a resolution. He stressed that teachers are willing to return to work but only under safe conditions, adding that the union expects the arrest of the alleged perpetrators.

The dispute stems from an incident on April 8 at Bethel Presbyterian JHS, where a former student, identified as Aaron Mensah, was reportedly found loitering in a classroom during a mock examination. After being confronted by the invigilating teacher, Mohammed Abdela, he initially refused to leave and later returned with a group of individuals who allegedly assaulted the teacher.

Although the incident was reported to the Ghana Police Service, no arrests have been made so far. GNAT has demanded immediate action, warning that teachers will continue their strike until their safety concerns are addressed.

The outcome of the meeting is expected to determine whether teachers will resume duties or maintain their withdrawal from classrooms.
