FDA Launches Nationwide Probe Over Alleged Use of Plastic in Plantain Chips

The Food and Drugs Authority Ghana has begun nationwide market surveillance and laboratory testing of plantain chips following allegations that some vendors are melting plastic in frying oil to improve the crispiness and shelf life of the snack.

The move follows videos and reports circulating on social media suggesting that polythene materials are being added to hot oil during the preparation of plantain chips, raising serious concerns about food safety.

In a statement, the authority described the alleged practice as highly dangerous, warning that melting plastic into frying oil leads to direct chemical contamination of food and makes the product unsafe for consumption.

According to the FDA, heating plastics such as low-density polyethylene in oil at high temperatures can cause harmful chemical compounds to leach into the food.

The authority explained that this process can accelerate the release of substances including plasticisers, phthalates and antioxidants into the oil, posing potential toxicological risks to consumers.

Citing scientific evidence, the FDA noted that prolonged exposure to such chemicals has been associated with endocrine disruption, hormonal imbalances and a higher risk of certain cancers.

The regulator further emphasised that under Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), the sale of contaminated or unwholesome food is prohibited. The use of non-food-grade substances such as plastics in food preparation is therefore a criminal offence.

The statement warned that anyone found engaging in the practice will face strict legal consequences, including prosecution and the possible permanent closure of their business.

The FDA has also encouraged consumers to remain alert and report suspicious food preparation methods, particularly if plantain chips produce an unusual chemical smell, leave a plastic-like aftertaste, or retain an unusually long-lasting texture.

The authority added that the results of its ongoing laboratory tests will be made public once investigations are concluded.
