The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) will by next year introduce a West African boxing league following the success of the maiden Ghana Professional Boxing League.

Abraham Kotei Neequaye, President of the Ghana Boxing Authority in an exclusive interview with 3Sports noted that there is a need to deliberately prepare African boxers for world championships.

“To get a world champion is not an easy thing,” he said, adding “You can have boxers fighting around unless you get into the world ratings, you can never have the chance to fight a world title belt. You need a number of fights to qualify to fight a WBO, WBC, or IBF African title. You need like 10 fights.”

The West Africa Boxing league will go ahead alongside, the Boxing league which resumes in 2023.

“The West Africa Project that we intend to start, we are talking to the federation heads. “We are going to run this halfway whiles we continue with the league.”

“The best we get from the league will be positioned in the West African project”

Charles Quartey Boxing Foundation won the maiden edition of the Ghana Professional Boxing League. The gym crowned the final night with an emphatic win over the Fit Square Gym, bringing a total point build-up at the end of the season to 48 in 20 bouts.

They won in total, 16 bouts and lost four during the bi-monthly boxing league.

The Gym thus gabbed the Renault saloon car, cash awards plus other goodies at stake.

Charles Quartey Boxing Foundation’s Godson Amuzu, fighting at the super welterweight division sealed the league championship with a second-round technical knockout against a former league title contender, fit squares’ Rocky Otoo, who appeared not ready for the night.
