The confirmation of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee for Bole District in the Savanah Region has been officially postponed to Monday, May 12, following tensions and protests by sections of the youth in the district.
The decision to reschedule the process was taken after chaotic scenes erupted in Bole on Friday, May 9, when angry youth took to the streets to express their disapproval of the nominee.
Protesters were seen waving placards and burning tyres, prompting security concerns and the need to calm tensions.
In an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday, May 9, the Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Be-Awuribi, explained that the original date for the confirmation was never May 9, as some had assumed.
“We first proposed the 7th of May as the date for the confirmation, but the little interaction and dialogue is something that needs to be done, so we have postponed it to Monday, 12 May,” he stated.
The Minister stressed that no formal Assembly Member gathering was held on May 9, and that the assumption of a scheduled confirmation on that day was inaccurate.
“No Assembly Member was gathering for the confirmation of MCE today. The actual date was on Wednesday. It was first scheduled by the Presiding Member on Wednesday, and it was again postponed to Monday, 12 May.”
He further revealed that the youth had earlier notified the Ghana Police Service of their intent to embark on a demonstration that would span Tuesday and Wednesday of the same week, describing the action as an attempt to interfere with the confirmation process.
“The youth also wrote to the Ghana Police Service notifying them of their intent to demonstrate. Indeed, they said they were going to demonstrate on a Tuesday and continue on Wednesday, and culminate the demonstration by coming to submit the petition to the Coordinating Director on the said Wednesday.
“This was an attempt to provoke the processes of the confirmation. So we advised the Presiding Member and the Assembly to reschedule the date, and they rescheduled it for Monday, which is on the 12th, so there was no process whatsoever for today.
“Savannah has seven districts, and we have had all six confirmed. It is only Bole that is outstanding. By the grace of God, when we go on Monday, the Assembly Members will speak, he said.”
