Ghana’s TVET System Gets Digital Boost Through GETFund-UNESCO Partnership

The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has partnered with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to strengthen digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills training in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions across Ghana.

The partnership, formalised through the signing of a Letter of Intent (LoI), seeks to equip young Ghanaians with relevant technology skills needed to compete in an increasingly digital economy and respond to the changing demands of the job market.

The agreement was signed at the GETFund headquarters in Accra, with education sector stakeholders, industry players and development partners describing the initiative as a major step towards transforming Ghana’s TVET system.

UNESCO Country Representative to Ghana, Edmond Moukala, said the collaboration reflects the organisation’s commitment to advancing education through innovation, technology and strategic partnerships.

He praised GETFund’s investment in education and noted that improving AI and digital competencies among TVET students would enhance their competitiveness globally while enabling Ghana to benefit from opportunities emerging from the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

“This signing ceremony marks a strategic milestone in UNESCO’s shared commitment to transforming education in Ghana through innovation, partnership and digital transformation,” he said.

GETFund Administrator, Richard Kwasi Ofori Adjei, said the partnership demonstrates the Fund’s commitment to creating sustainable opportunities for young people through education and skills development.

He stressed that the rapid adoption of technology across industries makes it essential to equip learners with digital literacy, AI knowledge and innovation-focused skills.

“As technology continues to transform industries and redefine the future of work, the need to equip our young people with relevant digital competencies, AI capabilities and innovation-driven skills has become more urgent than ever,” he stated.

Mr. Adjei described the agreement as more than a formal arrangement, saying it represents the beginning of a new phase in Ghana’s education transformation efforts.

Under the partnership, GETFund and UNESCO will work together to integrate AI education into TVET curricula, update training programmes, improve the digital capacity of instructors and expand access to technology-focused learning opportunities.

The initiative will also combine UNESCO’s global expertise in digital education with GETFund’s role in financing educational development to create sustainable digital learning environments in TVET institutions.

The signing ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including Director-General of the Ghana TVET Service, Dr. Eric Kofi Adzroe; Microsoft’s Head of Government Affairs for Africa, Akua Gyekye; and KPMG Ghana’s Head of Corporate Affairs and Accounting Advisory Services, Joyceline Coleman.

Stakeholders described the partnership as timely, noting that integrating AI and digital skills into technical education will help bridge the gap between classroom training and the evolving needs of industry.

The two organisations are expected to roll out joint programmes, capacity-building initiatives and infrastructure support aimed at preparing TVET graduates for employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in the digital economy.
