As part of activities marking this year’s Mothers’ Day celebration, about 300 widows and single mothers in the Ashanti Region were treated to meals, entertainment and free health services at the forecourt of New Amakom M/A Basic School on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
The event featured music, entertainment and the serving of hot meals and drinks to participants in a lively atmosphere.
Nestlé Ghana supported the programme by providing Maggi products, while Kumasi South Hospital offered free health screening services for the beneficiaries.
Participants also received hampers in recognition of their efforts and sacrifices as mothers.
Senior Midwife at Kumasi South Hospital, Stella Kabah, said the health screening exercise was largely successful but revealed that many participants recorded high blood pressure levels.
She expressed concern that many people continue to ignore symptoms associated with hypertension despite the risks of stroke and other health complications, and advised affected participants to seek further medical attention at health facilities.
The celebration also featured a cooking competition involving several women’s groups from the Ashanti Region, including Presbyterian Women Fellowship, Odo Ne Nteasee Fun Club, Glory Life Assemblies of God Women Ministry, Sisters Fun Club and Akoma Fun Club Dumanafo, who prepared a variety of local dishes for the occasion.
Some beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the organisers for recognising and celebrating widows and single mothers on Mothers’ Day.
The programme was organised by Akoma FM in partnership with Nestlé Ghana’s Maggi brand.
Ashanti Regional Sales Manager of Nestlé Ghana, Eric Ntiri-Darko, said the initiative forms part of the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts and praised the collaboration with Akoma FM.
Head of Station at Akoma FM, Ransford Nana Osei Asare, described this year’s turnout as overwhelming compared to the previous edition, noting that participation increased from 150 people last year to 300 this year.
He added that giving back to society remains one of the station’s core values and thanked sponsors and participants for contributing to the success of the event.
