The MTN Ghana Foundation has commissioned a GH¢946,189.71 ICT and Robotics Centre at the New Asafo M/A Basic School in Kumasi to promote STEM education and expand access to digital learning for pupils.
The facility, commissioned on Thursday, July 16, is expected to directly benefit about 270 pupils while also providing robotics and technology training opportunities for other basic schools within the Kumasi Metropolis.
Speaking on behalf of MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Adwoa Wiafe, the company’s General Manager for the Northern Sector, Nii Adotey Mingle, said the project reflects the Foundation’s commitment to strengthening education and digital inclusion across Ghana.
He explained that the initiative transformed a previously unequipped ICT centre into a modern STEM learning facility, giving students the opportunity to develop practical technology skills regardless of their background.
The project was initiated after a visit by the then MTN Ghana Chief Executive Officer to the school in 2022 as part of the company’s Y’ello Care volunteer programme. During the visit, school authorities revealed that although an ICT block had been completed in 2017, it lacked computers and essential learning resources.
Following an assessment by Seed Global Consult, the MTN Ghana Foundation renovated the facility, including roofing repairs, repainting, improved security measures, electrical upgrades and the installation of air-conditioning systems.
The centre has been equipped with 35 all-in-one computers, refurbished furniture, and robotics kits to support hands-on learning in science and technology.
Nii Adotey Mingle said the facility will help students develop skills in coding, robotics and digital literacy while encouraging creativity, teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving.
He added that the centre would serve not only pupils of New Asafo M/A Basic School but also learners from other schools within the metropolis seeking STEM and robotics training.
He urged teachers to integrate the facility into their lessons to maximise its benefits and encouraged students to use the opportunity to explore careers in science, engineering and technology.
The headteacher of New Asafo M/A Basic School, Antwi Gabriel, expressed appreciation to the MTN Ghana Foundation, describing the centre as a significant improvement to teaching and learning. He assured that the facility would be properly maintained and used to equip students with skills needed to compete in the digital age.
